When a client approached our in-house interior decorator, Dirk Pienaar, to design and furnish the interior of their brand new, one-bedroom apartment with little creative expectation, we were elated!

Located at Silo 3, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, there was plenty of design inspiration with breath-taking sea, mountain or skyline views available from each and every room. With these views in mind, Dirk decided on a theme for the interior, designed to complement the beautiful surrounding terrain with a modern twist.

To bring this vision to life, Dirk kept the interior’s colour scheme on the neutral side using earthy tones, with a splash of black & white. He added some African flare, showcased with the chosen accessories and fabrics. Additionally, abstract wall art featuring earth-like characteristics brought the outdoors, indoors.

What do you get when you combine contemporary comfort and African earth? Pure magic.

In the living area, Dirk went with a genuine leather Daybed Sofa in a dark grey hue with adjustable headrests as a focal piece. An arc-shaped floor lamp with a matte black shade was used to create a warm glow, providing the perfect amount of light for the small space.

A floor rug dressed in a dynamic triangle pattern, 100% linen patterned scatter cushions and a mélange knitted throw were strategically placed throughout, creating a touch of warmth to the space.

For extra seating, Dirk chose a tufted upholstered ottoman in a trendy black & white hounds tooth pattern.

A black steel side table and a round coffee table with a white high-gloss top & black steel legs added a stylish twist to their usual functional purpose. The high-gloss media entertainer, dressed in both black & white boasted adjustable drawers to serve as extra storage.

For dining, ash wood & natural rattan dining chairs (Wegner Wishbone Chair replicas) were placed around the kitchen counter.

Trinket materials in and around the living space & kitchen varied from black & white marble, natural wood, stainless steel and ceramics.

In the bedroom, Dirk chose an ultra-mod genuine leather headboard & base set with high-gloss pedestals. Stainless steel, glass and silk bedside table lamps made a home on each pedestal for convenient bedside lighting.

For added comfort, black & white patterned scatter cushions made from a cotton-linen mix were placed. Similarly, to the living room couch, a black & white cotton mélange knitted throw was draped over the end of bed.

In order to admire the stunning views during the day while still needing privacy, a see-through curtain (100% polyester with a linen look & feel) in a taupe colour was the perfect choice. A block-out lining was added on a second rail for night-time privacy.

A custom-made cushion, made from UV protected fabric designed to withstand the direct morning sunlight & prevent fading, was made for ultimate bay window relaxation.
